Overview There
are currently 28 million migraine sufferers over the age of 12 in the United States.
Of these, 21 million are female and 7 million are male. Unfortunately, many migraine
sufferers receive a diagnosis of sinus or tension headaches; however, it is estimated
that 42% of patients who receive the diagnosis of sinus headache actually have
migraine. In this edition of Join the Dialogue, Susan Hutchinson, MD, and
Priscilla Chow, RN, MN, NP, CS, discuss how to differentiate between sinus
and migraine headaches so that a correct diagnosis can lead to the correct treatment
plan. Results from clinical studies that the faculty has been a part of as well
as real case studies will be presented. Learning
Objectives Upon completion of this course,
you should be able to: - Describe the International Society
Criteria for Acute Sinus Headache
- List the conclusions
of the SUMMIT study
- Describe the pathophysiology of sinus
symptoms that accompany migraine headaches
